I love Elder Nelson as well. He visited my mission in 1995 and I was able to spend two straight days with him as his interpreter. After he returned home, he took the time to personally call my parents to tell them that I was well and to thank them for preparing me for a mission. Those two days forged my testimony of modern-day prophets. He is a great man.
BTW - My wife is a scientist as well and also enjoyed at Ensign article.
