A Conversation with My Nephew

So I was over at my brother's last night and I thought I would enlist my nephew in helping me with a goal I have. The conversation went something like this...

Me: Nephew, I am getting married this summer.

Nephew: Really?

Me: Yeah, and you can help me by praying for it.

Nephew: I don't know, it's not like I'll get any cousins out of it.

Me: My kids will be your cousins.

Nephew: But they won't grow fast enough to be the same age as me.

Sister: She might marry someone who already has kids.

Nephew: (Look of disgust)

Sister: You wouldn't like that?

Nephew to me: I like you just the way you are.

Me: That's funny coming from you since you are the only one who asks me when am I going to get married.

The one person who I thought would be most supportive and he likes me just the way I am...hahahaha!

MacBook Pro

So my MacBook Pro has just randomly been turning off and taking like a million tries to turn back on. Could it be because I have dropped it at least ten times in the last 6 months? It has been over 24 hours since that last random shut down. Keep your fingers crossed it will last until the summer when I can get a free iPod with my new laptop.

Tut, tut looks like rain!

I am in rainy Washington State and am loving it! I get to wear sweaters and long pants and cozy clothes. It is really fun visiting my family here and totally relaxing! We are going to Astoria in a couple of days to visit the Goonies sites. So excited!

Strawberries, YUM!

I must be craving strawberries! Costco had strawberries for really cheap so I bought several clam shells to make strawberry freezer jam. So excited! And then today I had to pick up containers for the jam and strawberry frosting and bought a cake to go with it. That will have to wait for a while. I think I am going to crush the extra strawberries and mix it with the frosting...

October!

It is finally October and I can have a Halloween-y blog and get out my Halloween decorations! I just love Halloween colors, but I do have to say that I hate the darker side of Halloween. One of my favorite movie scenes is from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" when Willy goes trick-or-treating. And I love October because I get a week off of school.

Coats

I heard this on the radio in response to a question about working in a cold storage unit when the temperature is 113 degrees outside: "It's nice because you just walk into the freezer to cool off. The guys who work in the freezer actually wear coats." I just love the obvious, and that this news station thought that tidbit was news-worthy.

Beware of Compliments

Today one of my students told me I looked pretty. At first I thought she was sincere, then I paused and thought for a minute then responded, totally joking, "What do you want?" Her reply, "Umm, can I go get my notebook?" Quite humbling, beware of compliments from teenagers...:)

Really?

I was just reminded of a comment made by a coworker:

"They did a study and people who watch 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart' are more informed than people who don't watch any news at all."

Really? Well, duh...

That was his argument that liberals are more informed and smarter than conservatives.

Funny Student Comment

I gave a test yesterday and I had a student come in at the end of the day to make it up. When he was finished I asked him how it went. He said, "I'm not gonna lie...it was easy." For some reason I thought that was funny. Maybe it was just the way he said it. I assured him that I wasn't offended that he thought the test was easy. My job is pretty awesome.

Happy Constitution Day!

223 years ago the Congress responsible for revising the Articles of Confederation ratified the Constitution of the United States. Here are a couple of videos I appreciated on this day.

I love John Wayne, the Duke, I wish more celebrities were like him! I think we have forgotten that with our freedoms come responsibilities.

Penn & Teller are pretty awesome too!

Exploding!

Did anybody else's head explode today while listening to President Obama's press conference today. The whoppers this man tells, he obviously thinks we are stupid and can't look around us and see what is really going on in this country under his administration. The nerve of this guy, geez!

Obama Defends Handling of Economy, Acknowledges Voter Frustration

And yet he blames the situation on the previous economy when actually it is the Democrats who have controlled the House and the Senate since 2006. He plays fast and loose with the job growth numbers during the Bush Administration. I don't know how he calculated the growth from 2001-2008, but I am pretty sure he averaged all the numbers per year to get the slowest job growth since after World War II, or whatever it was he claimed. As I recall, job growth was considerable until 2006, and then we lost millions of jobs in 2008, offsetting what we had gained previously. This is why it is important our students understand mathematics and statistics!

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

This video made me giggle, several times...

A little update: School has started and it is going to be a busy year this year. I had a great summer with my family and ended up staying in Utah for most of the summer. I got a very pleasant surprise this summer when I got a grant to help me pay my graduate school tuition. Thanks Boeing! I also unexpectedly, although not so unexpectedly for some, renewed my annual pass to Disneyland, so if you have a hankering to go the Happiest Place on Earth, let me know :P I'm looking forward to the fall season, especially putting up my Halloween decorations. And I have a new favorite to add to my Favorite TV Shows List: Bones. I love how literal she is and doesn't have any inkling of popular culture or how to read any type of body language.
